Simple Checks to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter
Some Easy Checks Now Can Save Money and Stress Later
Winter driving brings unique challenges, from icy roads and reduced daylight to wet, slippery conditions and heavy traffic. Ensuring your vehicle is prepared for the colder months isn’t just about comfort, it’s about safety for you, your passengers, and everyone on the road.
At Europit, we’ve been helping drivers across the East of England stay safe and confident behind the wheel for over 20 years. From essential tyre care to free vehicle inspections, our team of expert technicians is dedicated to keeping your car roadworthy throughout the year.
Even a few simple checks now can prevent inconvenient breakdowns, costly repairs, or potentially dangerous situations when winter weather hits. To make it easy to remember what to check, the RAC recommends using the acronym ‘FORCES’ where each letter stands for six key areas that will help ensure your vehicle is winter-ready.

1. F – Fuel
It might sound obvious, but make sure you have enough fuel before every journey, especially during winter. Cold weather, traffic jams and slower driving conditions all increase fuel consumption. If your journey takes longer than expected, running low could leave you stranded in poor weather. Always fill up before setting off.
2. O – Oil
Oil keeps your engine running smoothly, so it’s essential to check your levels regularly. Use your dipstick to make sure the oil sits between the minimum and maximum marks. If it’s low, make sure you top it up with the correct oil for your vehicle (you can find this in your vehicle handbook).
Avoid overfilling, as too much oil can cause engine damage. If you’re unsure, don't hesitate to pop into your local Europit branch, where our team can check it for you in minutes.

3. R – Rubber
Your tyres are your car’s only contact with the road, so they need to be in top condition for winter.
Check your tyre tread depth and pressure:
-
The legal tread depth is 1.6mm, but Europit recommend at least 3mm for safer grip in icy or wet conditions.
-
You can use a tread gauge or a 20p coin. If you can’t see the outer band of the coin, your tread is above the legal limit.
-
Check your tyre pressure using the guide in your manual or inside the driver’s door.
If you’re unsure, Europit offers free tyre checks to keep you safe and compliant.
Don’t forget your wiper blades! Winter brings rain, sleet and road grime - so visibility is vital. Run your fingers along your wiper blades to check for splits or damage. Replace them every 12 months to ensure a clear view ahead.

4. C – Coolant
Coolant (which is a mix of water and antifreeze) keeps your engine from overheating or freezing. Only check levels when the engine is cool to avoid injury. The coolant should sit between the minimum and maximum marks on the tank. If levels drop suddenly, book in with Eurpit for a car service, as this could indicate a leak or another issue that needs attention.
5. E – Electrics
Battery issues are one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns. Cold weather reduces a battery’s performance, so if yours is a few years old, it might be time to have it tested or replaced.
Also check that all your lights and indicators are working properly — clear visibility is essential when the days are shorter and road conditions are poor.

6. And Finally S – Screenwash
Top up your screen-wash with a winter-grade product effective down to -15°C. It helps keep your windscreen clear of salt, dirt and ice. Ordinary water or weak mixtures can freeze and damage the system, so make sure you use the right solution.
Bonus Tip: Prepare a Basic Winter Car Kit
A few handy items in your boot can make a big difference in an emergency. Your basic winter car kit should include:
- Ice scraper and de-icer
- Jump leads
- Reflective warning triangles (ideally two)
- Sunglasses (for low winter sun)
- In-car phone charger and portable battery
- Blanket or warm clothing
It’s quick to put together, and you’ll be thankful to have it if the weather turns.
